Joe Upham tells the story of the Bakers Massacre

Joe Upham is a descendant of Heavy Runner. The American Military led by Colonel Baker attacked Chief Heavy Runner’s camp on January 23 1870. At dawn the military began shooting at the camp from the top of the hill. Joe Upham is directly descended from one of the few survivors of the massacre. His father was Bill Upham, Bill’s father was killed in the massacre. Joe Upham’s grandmother, father and a few of his fathers sibling survived and walked to Fort Benton looking for safety. Joe Upham told his story at the age of 74 his name is Iron Shield.
